Peanut Butter Dog Cake - My Sunday Activity

I had always wanted to make a cake for my dogs, but never seemed to get around to it. Waking up to a rainy Sunday morning, I decided it would be the perfect time to try out a dog recipe that Amanda gave me. The recipe uses all human ingredients that are not too hard to find in your cabinet at home. I even gave my dad a piece, not telling him it was for dogs (very nice thing to do on Father's Day) ...

It took about 45 minutes to make; from start to finish. My mom gave me this really cool jumbo cupcake mold to use. The batter only filled up the mold about 1/3 of the way, therefore the pieces didn't really fit too well together. Improvising, I added another layer of cottage cheese frosting to make it a double-decker cake.

As you can see, I had a very attentive audience as I was frosting the cake. It was interesting, because I was positive the dogs knew the cake was for them. Little One stayed with me during preparation, so she got to lick the bowl.

My dad came up with the smart idea of putting a towel down underneath them. It turned out to be very messy indeed. At first, both Goldens started to taste the cake. Little One, to my complete surprise, stayed back away from the action.

Bragi ended up eating the most. He really got in there and started wolfing it down. You can see the nice mess he made.

Little One came in for the clean up.

Here is the recipe, so you can try it out for yourself:

Peanut Butter Delight Dog Cake

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)

Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a ring mold sprayed with a nonstick spray for 40 minutes.

Frost this cake with low fat cottage cheese and decorate with carrot pieces. Store in refrigerator.

Doggles!

My mom, being the overprotective dog mom as she is, purchased three pairs of Doggles for my dogs. They are protective eye wear for pooches, most likely going to be used for rides on the boat. These are pretty cool, as they also can protect the dog's eyes when they are traveling in the car with their head out the window.

I can only imagine the scene they are going to create walking down the marina to my boat..

Little One has a size small, and they don't really bother her too much.

Buckles has a size large, and they don't bother him too much either. You can see how there are two straps; one below the neck and one behind their ears. This ensures they don't fall off.

Bragi hates them. He collapses in a great heap when we put them on his head. He refuses to move until we take them off.

Featured Dog of the Week: Frankie Beans

Mr. Frankie Beans is an adorable long-haired daschund owned by Kyla and Kevin Curley of East Boston. Beans joins a large family that consists of two older brothers, Bill Bradski and Charlie, and an older sister, Mollie. The old man of the gang, Bill Bradski, is a frisky border collie and Charlie and Mollie happen to be very playful cats.

Beans the Daschund is almost four months old, and recently grew to 8 lbs! Kyla and Kevin found the breeder using an internet search, which was located in Fall River, Shirls Whispering Winds.

Beans is adjusting well to life in Eastie and loves his brothers and sister. Bill tolerates Beans, but gets jealous when Beans steals all of his toys.

Charlie mostly won't go near him, but Kyla is fairly confident that Mollie and Beans are having a love affair. They like to wrestle a lot and sometimes get a bit too close for Kyla's comfort.

Beans LOVES getting baths and gets extremely excited for the blow dry afterwards! He has gotten so used to it that when Kyla dries her hair after a shower, he dashes into the bathroom to share the wealth. He does a little dance around her feet until she points the hair dryer at him and gets upset if she stops. Because of this she then has to air dry her hair!

We welcome Mr. Frankie Beans to Eastie, and we can't wait to see him grow into an adorable hot dog!!!!

Molly's Rescue

Molly is an adorable wire-haired dachshund/beagle mix that was adopted by my coworker John M's family. She was located in a high-kill shelter in Tennessee when she was found by John's family on SaveADog.org.
She is six months old and is house-trained, crate-trained and recently spayed. She even knows how to ring a bell by the door when she needs to go outside!

She enjoys chewing on her toys and recently on John's mom's shoes.. which we hope is just a phase.
We welcome Miss Molly to a wonderful family in Marshfield, Ma. What a wonderful ending to this story!
